Check out our new and improved recipe layout, now with your private notes

Don’t get me wrong, I love the recipes that fill every corner of my house. The fat notebooks I created as a 10-year-old with recipes cut from my mom’s magazines. The hundreds of cookbooks that overflow my living room, kitchen, and bedroom – with scribbled notes from special occasions (“Made cupcakes for Jasper’s 3rd birthday party. Edges crumbled and he had a meltdown and howled”), and practical tips (“triple the bacon!”). The manila folders stuffed with spattered print-outs, in stratified layers by holidays, and for weeknights when meal-planning resolutions hit hard.

And then there’s my phone — serene, portable, and pocket-sized, with the Yummly app, hundreds of recipes I already love, and millions more at my fingertips.

Nothing will ever replace my mom’s red Betty Crocker Cookbook, but Yummly, in the best Marie Kondo kind-of way, sure makes my life easier. And now the app is better than ever, with an improved recipe layout and the option to create private notes on any recipe. Definitely triple the bacon.

Tour our new recipe layout

If you’ve cooked from the Yummly app lately you might have noticed our clean and sparkly recipe makeover. On your phone, you can follow along on the recipe for Sloppy Joes shown below to see how the new tab navigation works. Just swipe up and down and tap right and left to explore. (More on this in a moment.)

We’re excited about tab navigation because:

  • You can quickly see if a recipe is for you — easily scan key information like the description, rating, ingredients, and directions.

  • Cooking is streamlined. No more scrolling wayyy up and down in a recipe between ingredients and steps — just tap to the section you want.

  • Shopping is simplified. You can easily check your inventory and buy the ingredients you need.

Overview tab

Let’s start with Overview. As you might expect, this tab includes a description of the Sloppy Joes, the number of servings, how long it takes to make, calories per serving, and a rating by Yummly home cooks. (Feel free to share your rating!)

But there’s more. Tap the teal “plus” button beneath the photo to reveal three very useful functions.

  • Tap “Add to Meal Plan” and you can save the recipe to your personal Meal Plan.

  • Tap “Add to Shopping List” to save all of the ingredients (more on that below).

  • Tap “Update Collections” and you can file away the recipe for later — maybe under a “weeknight favorites” category that you create. No more manila folders!

You can also access that same Update Collections function on the main Overview tab.

Ingredients tab

On the next tab, you’ll see all the ingredients for the recipe.

  • Tap “Add All to Shopping List” to quickly add all the ingredients in the recipe to your personal list. Your shopping list syncs across all devices, so you always have your list with you, wherever you go.

  • Already got ketchup? Tap the “plus” sign on individual ingredients if you only want to add certain items to your list.

  • Tap “Buy” and you can order the ingredients for delivery* to your home.

*Grocery ordering service available in select U.S. locations.

Directions tab

Now we’re cooking! Tap right from Ingredients to Directions to see how the recipe goes together.

  • If it’s a Yummly Original recipe, meaning one that our team of contributors created exclusively for Yummly, you’ll see the directions right here — but you need to be a paid Yummly subscriber to access them.

  • If it’s a recipe created by another site, we’ll whisk you off to that site for the directions.

  • Tapping the “Add to Meal Plan” button saves the recipe to your personal Meal Plan.

  • Tapping the “Made It” button adds the recipe to your Scheduled & Made collection so you can easily find it when you want to make it again. You’ll also get the opportunity to leave a review.

Nutrition tab

Are nutrition details important to you? If you’re a paid Yummly subscriber, you can tap on the Nutrition tab to reveal how the Sloppy Joes recipe shakes out, and iOS users can share data with the Apple Health app. (Total calories and the percent of macronutrients are available to non-subscribers as well.)

My Notes tab

A picture of a phone with a Yummly recipe open to the My Notes tab

Yummly home cooks have been asking for this one! Everybody likes food cooked just right, whether it’s with an extra pinch of this, or way less of that. Notes are here so you can remember to make a recipe exactly how you like it, every time.

The Notes feature is exclusively for paid Yummly subscribers — and your notes are viewable only by you. Did you make the Sloppy Joes for a special birthday? Do you want to tweak the recipe next time, maybe with part ground turkey, or twice as much garlic powder? In the recipe navigation at the top of your phone screen, tap the My Notes tab and follow the directions to jot down any details you want to remember.

Notes will automatically sync across your devices, whether you’re accessing the recipe on your phone, desktop, or tablet.

Reviews tab

Maybe you loved the Sloppy Joes recipe just as it is. Or maybe you want everyone to know you like it better with hot sauce and bacon added. On Reviews, share your thoughts (and even a photo) and read what other Yummly home cooks have to say.

As I was saying, I’ll never give up my mom’s old Betty Crocker Cookbook. But my inner Marie Kondo is stoked about all the ways Yummly’s new recipe pages are making my time in the kitchen better organized, more useful, and of course, more tasty. Head to the Yummly app to try these new features!
