Description
Yellow cake generously frosted with vanilla buttercream is a classic dessert that everyone will love, and a recipe you need in your repertoire. The cake layers have a rich flavor from butter, buttermilk and vanilla, and using cake flour ensures that they’re light and tender. You can keep decorations simple, or have at it with piped buttercream and rainbow sprinkles for more flair. Note that the total time includes cooling. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Annalise Sandberg.

- nonstick baking spray with flour (containing oil and flour; or use softened butter and all-purpose flour)
- 2 3/4 cups cake flour
- 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt (for cake, plus a pinch for frosting)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 tsp. vanilla extract (divided)
- 2 cups unsalted butter (1 lb.; divided, at room temperature)
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 5 cups powdered sugar (sifted to remove lumps)
- 4 Tbsp. whole milk (or 5 Tbsp. if needed)
- candy sprinkles (for decorating; optional)

Directions
- Make cake: Preheat oven to 350°F with a rack set in center. Spray two 8-inch cake pans with nonstick baking spray, or grease them with butter and dust with flour, shaking out excess. Line cake pan bottoms with parchment paper (To cut parchment the right size, set a pan on top of parchment and trace around it with a pencil, then cut out the round with scissors.)
- Sift cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and 1/2 tsp. salt through a large mesh strainer or sifter into a medium bowl. Set aside.
- In another medium bowl, whisk together eggs, egg yolks, buttermilk, and 2 tsp. vanilla. Set aside.
