- 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate (chopped)
- 1/4 cup Dutch-processed cocoa (lightly packed unsweetened)
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1/4 cup whisky
- 3/4 cup full fat sour cream
- 1 Tbsp. pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups cake flour (or all purpose flour - sifted)
- 3/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature -1 stick)
- 1 cup light brown sugar (firmly packed)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup canola oil
- 3 egg yolks (at room temperature)
- 3 eggs (at room temperature)
- 2 Tbsp. grated orange zest
- 1 Orange
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp. bitters
- 6 egg whites (3 reserved from cake recipe)
- 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
- 2 cups unsalted butter (at room temperature, cut into small cubes - 2 cups, 4 sticks)
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- 3 tsp. whisky
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 4 Tbsp. powdered sugar (sifted, may not be necessary)
