- 1 whole white onions (sliced)
- 1 minced shallots
- 4 cloves minced garlic
- 3 ginger (sliced)
- 3 Tbsp. tomato paste
- 4 cups beef stock (you will need to fill ¾ of your pot, use more if necessary)
- 3 star anise
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 tsp. fennel seeds
- 1 tsp. kosher salt (+ 1 tbsp)
- 1 tsp. ground black pepper (+ 1 tbsp)
- 4 carrots (cut into chunks)
- 4 lemongrass stalks (cut into 3-inch lengths)
- 1/2 can soda (natural coconut flavored, or 7UP)
- 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp. light soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp. fish sauce
- 1 Tbsp. Chinese five-spice (*Optional*)
- 3 potatoes (yukon, cut into chunks *Optional*)
