- 2 Tbsp. urad dal (or Ulutham Paruppu 1 tbsp is 15 ml)
- 1 Tbsp. chana dal (Kadala Paruppu or Bengal Gram Dal)
- red chillies (5 nos. Whole dry, See notes below)
- tamarind (1 nos., Marble Size Ball)
- 1 tsp. sesame oil
- 1/2 tsp. jaggery
- 1 pinch asafoetida (or hing)
- salt (to taste)
- water (as required to grind the thogayal)
