- fresh ground black pepper (to taste)
- 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
- 1 Tbsp. minced garlic
- 28 oz. crushed tomatoes (1 can, use fire-roasted if you can find them)
- 8 oz. tomato sauce (1 can)
- 1 cup low sodium beef broth
- 2 Tbsp. chili powder
- 2 tsp. ground cumin
- 2 tsp. oregano
- 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes (see recipe notes)
- 1 bay leaf
- 15 oz. kidney beans (1 can, rinsed and drained)
- 15 oz. pinto beans (1 can, rinsed and drained)
