Recipe
This is, for the most part, the recipe, I followed. I used 1 and a half containers of 14 oz pizza sauce and then a small (I think 8oz...the smallest one) jar of regular tomato sauce. Didn’t mix it before hand, just threw it in when it was supposed to be thrown. I think the half cup water, and half jar of pizza sauce, and small can of tomato sauce really helped, especially cook the noodles and not dry it out. I’ve used a similar recipe where you put noodles on bottom, don’t stir, and use no water and the noodles were quite tough. Another great thing, I had to (bc I was left at work) cook this an extra hour on low and it Wasn't dry at all. I think that was attributed to mixing all ingredients together before starting heat and the amount of liquid in it; whether pizza sauce or tomato sauce. And I didn't put any green peppers or olives in (tho my sister wanted the olives 😜). But, I will say, the Italian sausage and cut up pepperoni really made this dish from just a regular hamburger casserole to a fun/pizza-like meal. I have no idea why the girl in the first recipe I tried said to only use a few pepperoni's on the top or else it’d be too spicy...???🙄 I did not find that to be the case. From the bag, I cut up at least 3/4ths of them, mixed them all up with their food, and I used rest on top with mozzarella. I also think mixing REALLY helped and three last things: as the above recipe suggests, cook onions and garlic before putting in pot... I just threw it all in there. Knew they'd cook. Secondly, I mixed about a half to 3/4th cup of Italian blend cheese in mix and then did mozzarella on top with pepperonis. The little bit of mixed in cheese greatly added flavor. And lastly, sorry this is so long... when layering it, after each layer, I sprinkled Italian seasoning and other such seasonings... to reiterate, after each layer before mixing. I believe this really gave it a good taste.
Hope this helps someone. My whole family and friends (brought a lot to work) all fought over it. Happy cooking!
