  • 1 yellow onion (or small white, peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 4 large garlic cloves (minced)
  • 3 tablespoons flour (all-purpose)
  • 1 cup chicken stock
  • 2 cups milk (I used 2% low-fat milk)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves (divided)
  • 4 pounds yukon gold potatoes (sliced into 1/8-inch rounds, and peeled beforehand, if desired)

    The flavor was delish! I used 3 1/2 lbs potatoes based on some reviews of it being dry. I think that was definitely the way to go, but it still took about 1 1/2 hrs to cook. At 1 hour, the potatoes still had a bit of a crunch to them. All in all, a terrific dish. I just stopped a star because the cook time was off.

    I have made these twice now. The second time was the best! I did a combo of sharp white cheddar, mozzarella, monterey jack with habanero, and gouda.... so good.

    This was so delicious!! I added a little extra milk and broth because some of the other comments said they were dry. I also used 3 1/2 lbs of potatoes and the same amount of the other ingredients. My family loved them! I will make this dish again.

    A bit dry and would like for this to be creamier, will decrease the amount of thyme in the future

    Good idea to put a little olive oil at the bottom of the dish you are cooking it in but great recipe

    Best version by far! Super cheesy but not to oily. I used whole milk and cheddar cheese. It came out great!

    Need to use half the liquid. I agree to par boil potatoes. It takes to long for them to cook. They never got done. I ended making it into to cheesy potato soup.(added more cheese and salt)

    Excellent! I followed everything as described except I used half the potatoes and half the liquid. Resulted in creamy, flavorful potatoes! I would suggest if you make the full amount to double the flavorful ingredients :)

    Directions should include a note par boil the potatoes to ensure they cook well the sauce is not enough to cook them through in the oven without them sitting in the oven for an hour and a half

    Turned out great, cook time was about 40-45 minutes though. I like to add paprika and chili powder for a bit more kick :)
