- 3 cups sugar
- 2 sticks butter (softened)
- 1/2 cup Crisco
- 1 cup milk
- 1 Tbsp. vanilla
- 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 5 large eggs
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 3 Tbsp. poppy seeds
- 1 stick butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup milk (I use skim)
- 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar (divided, you may need a bit more)
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 2 tsp. espresso powder (this only gives the tiniest hint of coffee flavor but is mostly used to give the icing an beautiful deep color)
- 1/2 tsp. almond extract (optional, I think it makes the cake taste quite fine)
