Description
It’s easy to see why the old-fashioned is one of the most popular drink orders these days: It’s fruity and sweet, with deeper notes of caramel and nuts, and a refreshing finish. Elevate your drink by choosing the best-tasting ingredients you can. Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, optional brown sugar simple syrup, Italian maraschino cherries, and a ripe, sweet orange make this version of the cocktail sing. So does muddling some orange and cherry to release their flavors. To make your own simple syrup, combine 1/4 cup packed brown sugar or granulated sugar and 1/4 cup water in a glass measuring cup. Microwave until the sugar dissolves, 1-2 minutes, stirring once or twice. Let cool, then bottle and use for up to 1 week. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Maria C. Hunt.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp. simple syrup (plus 1/2 tsp. more if you like, and preferably made with brown sugar; see recipe description for details; or use regular store-bought simple syrup)
- 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 2 orange slices (thin, divided)
- 2 Luxardo maraschino cherries (divided)
- 1 tsp. club soda (1 splash; or water)
- ice cubes
- 2 oz. bourbon whiskey (straight bourbon, or rye whiskey)
Directions
- Add 1 tsp. simple syrup, the bitters, 1 orange slice, 1 cherry, and a splash of soda to a rocks glass. Using a muddler or a wooden spoon, gently smash the cherry and orange slice to a pulp to release all the juice and oils. Remove orange rind.
- Fill the glass with ice, then add whiskey and stir with a long-handled iced tea spoon or bar spoon. Taste and add 1/2 tsp. more simple syrup if you’d like the drink a little sweeter. Thread the remaining orange slice and cherry on a cocktail pick and garnish the drink.
