Description
Unleash your inner monster! These cute and slightly spooky cupcakes are perfect for a family baking project and for your next Halloween party. The simple recipe starts with a chocolate cake mix, but homemade vanilla frosting, piped to look like fur, and candy decorations ensure these cupcakes aren’t only delicious, but impressive, too. To get the spooky look, be sure to plan ahead and have decorating supplies on hand. You’ll need about 3 piping bags if you want to create multiple colors, and 3 grass piping tips (#233 or #234, or both; or use 1 tip and wash it between colors). You’ll also need cupcake liners, candy eyes and other candies, and gel food coloring. You can get supplies online or pick them up at a craft store. The recipe, which makes 24 to 28 cupcakes, is a Yummly original created by Annalise Sandberg.
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (devil’s food)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk (or 2% milk, for cupcakes)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
- 2 Tbsp. whole milk (or 2% milk, for frosting)
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- gel food coloring (green, red, and yellow, or any favorite color)
- candy eyes (Edible)
- m&ms
- Sour Punch Straws (or other candies)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 2 regular muffin pans (24 muffin cups total) with cupcake liners or grease well with nonstick cooking spray. Regular muffin pan cups are about 2 3/4 in. wide and 1 1/4 in. deep and hold about 1/3 cup. Depending on the size of the pan and the liners you use, you may get 24-28 cupcakes.
- Add cake mix, eggs, 1 cup milk, and the vegetable oil to the bowl of a stand mixer or a large bowl if using a hand mixer. Beat with the whisk attachment on medium speed until smooth, about 2 minutes.
- Fill each cupcake liner with about 3 Tbsp. batter; for nicely domed cupcakes, liners should be no more than two-thirds full.
