Description
For many families, no holiday meal is complete without that comfort-food special, green bean casserole, on the table. Here, instead of the usual canned green beans, we’ve opted for frozen for better color and a tender-crisp texture. But we added extra of everybody’s favorite part of the dish, the french-fried onions. To get a jump-start on the dish, you can thaw the green beans overnight in the fridge, but wait to assemble the casserole until just before baking so the onions stay crisp. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Ashley Strickland Freeman.
Ingredients
- 16 oz. frozen green beans (whole, thawed and patted dry)
- cooking oil spray (or a little vegetable oil)
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz. per can)
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 cups french-fried onions (about 4 oz., divided)
- salt (optional)
- black pepper (optional)
Directions
- If green beans are still frozen, spread them out on a sheet pan for about 1 hour to thaw at room temperature, then pat dry. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a shallow 2-quart baking dish with cooking oil spray.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, and sour cream. Add the green beans and 1 cup french-fried onions and stir gently to combine.
- Spoon green beans into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining french-fried onions.
- Bake until the casserole is bubbly, 30-35 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper if you like.
