- 3/4 cup granulated sugar (reduce to 1/2 cup if your berries are quite sweet, mine weren't)
- 1 lemon (reduce to half lemon, or to taste, if preferred)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. canela
- 1 pinch salt (optional and to taste)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup canola oil (1/4 cup unsalted melted butter may be substituted)
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
