- 1 onion (medium to large, thinly sliced or ½ cup sliced onion)
- 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder (haldi)
- 1/4 tsp. chilli powder (lal mirch powder)
- 1/2 tsp. coriander powder (dhania powder)
- 2 cups water (or add as required)

- 2 Tbsp. coriander leaves (chopped, for garnish, optional)
- 1/4 cup coriander leaves (chopped, dhania patta)
- 1 Tbsp. mint leaves (chopped, pudina patta)
- 1/2 inch ginger (adrak, chopped or ½ tsp chopped ginger)
- 2 green chilies (chopped)
- 4 garlic (small, lahsun, chopped)
- 1 Tbsp. desiccated coconut (or fresh coconut)
- 2 Tbsp. water (for grinding)
- 1 indian bay leaf (small to medium, /tej patta)
- 2 green cardamoms
- 3 cloves (lavang)
- 1 inch canela (dalchini)
- 1 star anise (small, /chakriphool, optional)
- 2 mace (single strands of, /javitri)
- 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds (jeera)
- 5 peppers (black)
- 1 piece stone flower (patthar ke phool, optional)
