- 8 Tbsp. unsalted butter
- 4 garlic cloves (halved, germ removed, and grated on a Microplane grater)
- 1/4 cup flat leaf parsley (finely chopped)
- 2 tsp. lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
- 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp. black pepper (coarsely ground fresh)
- 2 tsp. kosher salt
- 2 Tbsp. canola oil
- 2 white onions (sweet, cut into 1/2 inch slices)
- 1 1/2 tsp. hot red pepper flakes (crushed)
- 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter (plus additional for the buns)
- 1 bunch thyme (tied into a bundle)
- 8 sesame seed buns
- 16 slices mild cheddar cheese (or other slices or crumbled cheese of choice, optional)
