- 1/2 cup fine cornmeal
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup rye flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 cup buttermilk (or yogurt)
- 1/3 cup molasses (or real maple syrup)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (or Demaria Sugar)
- 1/2 stick butter (softened)
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Pecans — Optional)
- 1/2 cup raisins (dried, figs or dates)
- 1 lb. navy beans
- 6 cups water (or more if needed, eyeball it.)
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1 whole bay leaf (do not crumble)
- 6 strips thick cut bacon (chopped into small dice)
- 1 yellow onion (peeled and diced very fine)
- 1/3 cup blackstrap molasses (or pure maple syrup)
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
- 1 tsp. dry mustard powder (., Do not use prepared mustard in the jar)
- 1 Tbsp. tomato paste (., from a can or tube)
- 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. ground white pepper (freshly, or black pepper if you must)
