I baked this cake for my husband’s birthday and it came our beautifully. I did substitute the cherry liquor with a cherry preserve product which thinned out with water over low heat. I also cut the sugar by a 1/4 cup because the sugar I used was a finely granulated. Lastly, I used four 8-inch round pans and baked them for 22 minutes to avoid having to cut the rounds in half. It worked fine and cut down on the bake time. All in all the cake was a success and the chocolate bark was a fancy touch!

Just a quick note, Kirsch is a cherry brandy not a liqueur. It has the sharpness of brandy and is not sweet. It is perfect for the cake. We can get sour cherries in a jar and mix the liquid from the jar with some sugar and corn or potato starch to thicken it somewhat and add the Kirsch to it. It is perfect for brushing the cake layers before adding the cherries and whipped cream. I enjoyed your recipe very much. Happy baking!
