This is the best chocolate cake I have ever made! It was delectable! I made a gluten- and dairy-free version (allergies!) that will defy anyone who says GF DF baked goods aren’t delicious. I swapped all-purpose GF flour for the regular flour, plain soy milk for dairy milk, Earth Balance Vegan butter sticks for the regular butter, and canned, full-fat coconut milk for the evaporated milk. The key to the frosting is to cook the mixture for a LONG time- I cooked mine for 30 minutes. You really do have to stir constantly so the eggs don’t cook! Mine never came to a boil, but it absolutely thickened. Sooo delicious. I’m making it again for my dad’s birthday!

Great Cake! Super soft and moist. The coconut and sugar mix become better after sitting awhile. I made this cake for Christmas and everyone loved this cake!

Amazingly delicious!!! I made it for my mother in laws birthday splitting the recipe in half since there are just 3 of us. Subbed out organic cacao for cocoa and almond milk for cow’s milk. I baked it in 1 8x8 Pyrex but next time would split it in 2 8x8’s to make it layered. For the frosting, I didn’t have evaporated milk, but did have whipping cream so I subbed that in for it. I chopped whole pecans and had organic shaved coconut to use. Made the whole recipe for frosting and sliced the cake in half to make it layered. The amounts worked well & we didn’t have a mountain of cake left, which is good for our waistlines! It was a hit! I couldn’t believe how good it turned out considering all my modifications to it! Cheers & RIP to your grandfather

It was ok, but I've tasted better. I even added a bit more sugar because the cake itself tastes too bland but still wasn't right.

Perfect!! I didn't have cornstarch so I used 3 tablespoons flour and cooked a little longer to get rid of the raw taste. Definitely getting cornstarch next time!

The frosting on this cake is the best. I made two 9" layers and one recipe of the frosting was plenty. We really liked the cake. The only thing I would say, is a true German chocolate cake has a sweeter less chocolatey flavor and a lighter texture. That is not a criticism just an observation. It was tasty.

I made this cake for my mom's birthday. We loved this cake! It got rave reviews from a very discriminating crowd. I made 3 8" layers and used them all with a double recipe of the frosting. It was both beautiful and delicious.
