  • 5 cups red cabbage (or one 10-ounce bag shredded)
  • 3 tablespoons red onion (minced)
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro (fresh)
  • 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise (best quality such as Hellmann's)
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice (from one lime)
  • 3 chipotle chiles in adobo sauce (canned, roughly chopped, plus 1-2 teaspoons sauce, see note below)
  • 1 large garlic clove (roughly chopped)
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup beer
  • 1 1/2 pounds cod (skinless, cut into 1-inch wide x 4-inch long strips)
  • vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 12 soft corn tortillas (6-inch, warmed)
  • lime wedges (for serving)

    Very tasty. I used only 1 pepper and 1 tsp of abode sauce. My kids would not eat if too spicy. Will definitely make it again. I just wish I could keep the oil from splattering all over the kitchen.

    Great recipe! 1 pepper = mild 2 peppers = med etc.... I think the batter needed an extra 1/2 tsp salt. the slaw comes out a little wet, maybe ditch the oil or implememt a salad spinner.

    Used shorelunch instead of beer batter and they turned out amazing! Sauce had just the right amount of heat and slaw gave it some crunch. Definitely doing this one again.

    These were delicious, everyone loved them. I made them according to the recipe (except for used a different cabbage because couldn't find red cabbage at my local store). Will definitely make them again!

    I think that in order to really get the crispy beer batter taste, it needs to be deep fried. Used the pan method for frying but the batter fell off the fish. The slaw recipe is good but makes a lot. Could be cut in half easily. Flavors were good. Would make again but do something different with the fish.

    This is my first time reviewing anything, but this needs to be mentioned - these were the very best tacos I have ever had. I followed the directions to the T and my brother and sister-in-law (huge taco lovers) also said these were the best tacos they've ever had! I also fried shrimp and used Ro*tel for an extra topping. There was lots of effort and time put into these but well worth it if you're trying to impress company! Follow the directions exactly!

    Great recipe, I added a couple things when building the tacos guacamole on top of the slaw after the chipotle sauce started off on the tortilla. Then topped with more freshly chopped cilantro and freshly cut tomatoes and a touch of hot sauce and a spicy breaded fish and also tilapia that was a straight grilled on the barbecue. It was awesome
