I made half a batch, and I ended up using almost twice the amount of sugar to overcome the taste of the shortening (I used Crisco in the form of sticks). It ended up tasting just like buttercream but it was a bit softer than buttercream but that can easily be fixed by popping it in the fridge (or freezer) for a minute or two
