Description
Tlacoyos are oval-shaped fried or toasted cakes made with masa, which is a traditional Mexican cornmeal dough. They are thicker than fresh corn tortillas and usually stuffed tasty ingredients. These Tlacoyos, or stuffed masa cakes, take about 40 minutes to prepare and they are only 90 calories. Fill with cream cheese and ham for a tasty treasure. Directions
- Mix together the tamale mix, flour, garlic powder, cumin, and salt. Add the water little by little and then the lard or oil. Knead together until it forms a dough.
- Form golf ball-sized balls out of the dough and cover with plastic as they are made. Flatten the balls with the hand or with a tortilla press.
- Place a tablespoon of filling inside each tortilla (spread with cream cheese and then place a slice of ham on top if using the second filling) and fold the sides to cover. Smooth out with the hands.
- Cook the filled tortillas on a hot griddle for approximately one minute on each side until slightly golden. Serve hot.
