  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 cup canola oil (OR melted coconut oil)
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups vegan butter (earth balance, softened baking sticks preferred)
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

    I made this cake for my daughter in-law for her birthday as she just recently became vegan due to health issues. It did not disappoint!! This was hands down the best chocolate cake I've ever had! LOVED IT!!

    I'm new to vegan and this is one of the best recipes I've found. It's moist and full of flavor. I made some minor changes only cause I didn't have certain ingredients on hand. I didn't have apple sauce so I used olive oil. Didn't even know there was such thing as vegan butter so I used regular. And I used coconut sugar instead of regular. I halved the frosting and it was still too much IMO. I'm cutting down on sugar so I only put a sliver of frosting on it. Still turned out great. Next time I'll have all the right ingredients.

    This turned out great! I’m not vegan but am making this recipe as cupcakes for my someone who is due to health reasons. The cake is delicious and moist. It is a little airy so piping on the frosting (which is also very good) worked better than trying to spread it on. Even my anti-vegan husband said that they were good and wouldn’t have known the difference if I hadn’t told him.

    Great vegan chocolate cake, I only substitute Coconut milk and extra virgin olive oil. Turn out Great!!!

    This cake is the best. Made it a lot and it never lets me down. My family has tried it and they said it was some of the best chocolate cake they have ever had. I definitely recommend

    Very good. Very very sweet, moist and delicious. I didn’t have any applesauce so I substituted with a banana, which gave the super chocolate flavor a hint of banana flavor.
