  • 250 grams chana dal (yellow dried split peas, rinsed until the water runs clear)
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 4 whole green chillies (pricked with a knife)
  • 2 centimeters fresh ginger (/¾in piece, peeled and cut into thin strips)
  • 3 garlic cloves (peeled and left whole)
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 3/4 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • coriander leaves (handful chopped fresh)

    It was very delicious. I used canned tomatoes instead of fresh but it was very tasty and fairly easy to make. However I now know what"prick the chilli" means. My fingers are still burning. LOL
