  • 2 tablespoons dark chocolate (Hershey’s, Special, optional)
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1 cup strong black coffee (I used freeze-dried instant coffee because I don’t drink it)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup salted butter (2 sticks or ½ pound, softened, but not melted!)
  • 1 1/2 pounds confectioner’s sugar (sifted)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons whipped cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons milk (or more to thin to the desired spreading consistency)
