Description
This recipe gives you two options for preparing fig jam, depending on your preference: One method is to use a bread machine, which is of course a hands-free process. If you don't have one of these tools, or prefer a more hands-on approach, you can make the jam the old-fashioned way, meaning on the stovetop. Either way, the combination of ripe fresh figs and port wine, with cinnamon and lemon juice for seasonings, is wonderful, especially when cooked down to a spreadable compote.

Directions
- Rinse the figs, cut off stems and then cut into quarters. Place all the ingredients In a bread machine and select the program "Jams". When the program is finished check for desired consistency. If not, run program again, checking until desired consistency is achieved. Place in sterilized jars, cool and store in the refrigerator.
- Alternative procedure: Place the figs in a saucepan with the sugar and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the sugar has dissolved. Add the lemon juice, wine and cinnamon stick. Heat to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, stirring occasionally, until desired consistency. Remove the cinnamon stick, place in sterilized jars, cool and store in the refrigerator.
