Spice-Infused Winter Sangria



  • 1,500 milliliters red wine (dry organic, I used a Tempranillo. Grenache, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon would be great, too)
  • 2 apples (halved, core removed and thinly sliced)
  • 2 oranges (1 sliced and just the juice and zest of the other)
  • 1 cup pomegranate arils
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 inches ginger (nub of peeled, cut in half)
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 8 star anise
  • 1 vanilla bean (split)
  • 1/2 cup brandy (or cognac)
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar (this can be adjusted to your desired level of sweetness)
  • 2 ginger beer (+ cups, /ale or club soda)
  • orange wedges (studded with cloves)
  • apple slices
  • pomegranate arils (additional)
  • frozen cranberries (or fresh)
  • Bartlett Pear (in addition to the apple)
