This cake was fluffy and moist and the best recipe I've tried. The icing came out very creamy without crystallization. I didn't understand a previous comment that it has no rising agent. It specifies self-rising flour. Unless your flour is old it will work well without additional baking powder or soda. No one left a bite of cake or icing that tried it.

This recipe has no rising agent so it came out flat as a pancake and hard as a biscuit. I think that’s a mistake in the recipe as every other southern caramel cake calls for either baking soda or baking powder and I can’t imagine the buttermilk can serve as the rising agent.
