I never thought this would have worked. It did. The sausage crust is the key. It should be as thin as you could get it. I used spinach, onion, and mushrooms as my veggies. I also added 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and a 1/4 teaspoon vanilla to this recipe. I used cheddar cheese (it should be grated and layered on the bottom on top if the spinach, but beneath the sliced mushrooms). I would suggest changing from a pie dish to a square or rectangular casserole dish while increasing the eggs from 6 to 8 (as I will next time). I used Fresh Market market gound country saysage. Perhaps making your own sausage would be even a better deal. The issue is too much sodium in the sausage.

It is 5 stars with some small/easy additions. Only a 3 stars as prepared.
I highly recommend adding some spice to the sausage before shaping it into the pan I love some salt, pepper, fennel, and crushed red pepper. You may add what ever you want though.
I also one time added spaghetti sauce on top of the sausage prior to adding the egg and veggies
