  • 1 tablespoon oil (my mom uses olive or grapeseed)
  • 1 inch ginger (chunk of, roughly peeled and sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (or Chinese rock sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing cooking wine
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hot water (+ approximately 2 to 3 cups hot water, boil in a kettle or heat it up in microwave)
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 3 cloves star anise
