I've made this recipe three times and have made a few modifications, once out of necessity (I didn't have 4 eggs) and had to make do with 3. The other variations were by choice.
1) I only used three eggs
2) I decided to use 2 tablespoons less butter just to try to cut back on some of the fat.
3) I used 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of pure vanilla extract.
The outcome: It tasted fabulous!
The other thing I did differently was that I made this dessert in a round Pyrex bowl. I was a little concerned it wouldn't bake correctly but it did and I was able to cut it into pie slices.
Love love love. (I'm trying to rate this 5 stars but for some reason 5th Star will not light up... nonetheless it does get all 5 stars)

Really good cake. I can’t have dairy so I made it with almond milk and a dairy free butter alternative and it turned out great!

The family enjoyed it so much they ate the whole thing in one sitting

I made this and my husband loved it! I took my time and it came out perfect. I added warm spiced apples as a topping and tastier when served cold chilled-refreshing for a summertime treat!

This was a challenge for me and I had to throw out the first batch of egg whites due to a small part of yolk that was in it and they wouldn't peak... but after starting again it turned out wonderful, the custard like bottom was creamy and the top was a little crusty, I grated a littke lemon peel on top. I gave it a 3 star because my husband wasn't a big fan due to the texture, so if you are expecting a cake like texture you won't get it here all the way thru.

Fantastic, followed recipe instructions. The cooking time could vari depending on your oven. The cake was a big hit with everyone.

Made this a few times now, it's turned out perfect every time and my hubby loves it, and he's very finicky!!

Cake with custard sounded so good, but I didn't get the three distinct layers. We did have this for a couple of meals but I ended up throwing out half of it. When it's served warm it's much better than after you've refrigerated it and serve it cold the next day. I'm not too likely to make this again, but if I would, I would serve some kind of fruit sauce with it.

I thought it was ok. Tasted good but that's all. To me, there's only 2 layers not 3. I don't think I'll make it again.

It turned out very pretty. But we gave it to our dog because we didn't like the texture and flavor. The top layer is very greasy as someone has pointed out. The custard layer was too dense. Won't make it again until I see a better recipe.

Made this with my son, it was not very well loved in my house I had to throw half of it out. Not delicious and texture was a huge put off for the kids.

I made this and there wasn't anything magical about it. It wasn't bad (though my son didn't like it at all), but I thought it was just "ok".

I absolutely LOVE this recipe! It was easy and fast. I took it out of the oven before the entire top was completely browned and it still jiggled a bit. That was PERFECT. The custard in the middle is creamy and delicious! I will DEFINITELY be making this again! (and again and again")

I just tried this cake it was awesome. If you have the time to make it. Its worth it. The only down side is that you will have to make more then one. :o)
I omitted the butter by mistake and it was still fabulous.
