  • 6 ounces ditalini pasta (or other small pasta)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove (smashed but left whole)
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes (to taste)
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce (can of)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tablespoon tomato paste (I buy it in a tube like toothpaste for recipes like this that just need a little!)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • pepper (a couple of grinds of, to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
