More soup than stew in my opinion. Use a sausage that stands up to cooking for an hour in liquid, normal hilshire farms stuff had a weird texture. Or take it out after browning and just put it I for the last 15 -20 minutes.
My family wasn’t fond of the squash. Substituted rutabaga for parsnip because it’s what they had at my store. It had a good crunch to it still.
Over all flavor wasn’t bad. Definitely hearty.

Very good hearty soup. I used spicy Cajun sausage instead of smoked beef and I didn't add celery (not a fan) or parsnips (sad looking at the grocery store). Also, it does not need to simmer for 40 minutes. Your vegetables with be mush. I only simmered until the veggies were soft...10-15 minutes.

This is an amazing soup/stew I do think the prep time was estimated a little low. It does take time to cut up all the ingredients but it is so worth it. This is a recipe I will be keeping in my favorite Yums for sure.

This is a whole family favorite. Especially when it's rainy or cold out. I double the sausage and pair with crusty bread.

A Quick Note: The time stated on yummly is a little off. It's 40 minutes just to simmer. That does not include prep, sautéing the sausage, caramelizing the onions, or bringing everything up to a roiling boil. If you have little ones, you may want to take the time to do all the dicing and cubing when they are down for a nap. That saved us lots of time when it was actually time to cook. I would put it's true "total" time at closer to 60-90 minutes.
Now we did make a few substitutions. I used acorn squash instead of butternut (I like butternut, my husband is not a fan). I had also read that we could have used "Delicata", but I could not find any. Also, for the turnips, I used rutabagas. Finally I had planned on using a 50/50 mix of yellow and purple potatoes, but my local store was out. If you ever find purple potatoes, they are FANTASTIC for soups/stews, also it's fun to freak out the kids with purple potatoes.
All in all very tasty. My two year old even tried a few bites! Would definitely make it again.

This dish is pretty good. I was beside myself to give it 3 or 4 stars as it is a little plain but it is actually really nice being as simple as it is. It made enough for 2 dinners in my house so I left one "as is" and doctored up the other and found that it really didn't need more spices. We also didn't use actual garlic cloves ( husband is allergic) so i am sure that is why I felt it needed a little something. I didn't want to blame the recipe for that, I am sure it would have more flavor if they were added. It was extremely filling! One bowl with a nice bread and I was stuffed :) perfect for a cold fall night as it "sticks to the ribs " . It does lack a bit of texture, everything besides the sausage becomes the same consistency but again a bread with a nice crust balances that out. I would definitely recommend this dish and will be making this again in the near future :) Thankyou for sharing!!!! It was my first "yummly" recipe and now my husband is a pretty big fan of this website!

This was real good. It was my family's first time eating butternut squash and it was amazing. I even took the left over to work for lunch the next day it was still good even after being nuked. Highly recommended.
