What a great way to use up leftover rice. Suburb flavor, served with beef tacos. Substituted Worcestershire sauce and added some hot sauce too.Used culantro instead of cilantro because it’s what I had, I’ll definitely make again.

Substituted the salsa Lozano for A1 because I couldn’t find it. Still tasted great. Had to add a little salt upon serving but none the less a great vegan dish.

Fantastic! Exactly as I remembered when I was in Costa Rica. The Lizano is the difference.

It was great by the time I added double the salsa. I usually like more spice than most recipes.

Turned out so good! Tasted just like the gallo pinto my host family made for me when I studied abroad in Costa Rica❤️

Excellent spontaneous accouterment to my Jerk Chicken! No salsa of course, so substituted the Worcestershire and added a bit of liquid smoke to match the flavor profile described. Loved it!

Very delicious! This is one of those recipes that you can add different things to in order for it to fit a certain meal. Simply adding an egg to this recipe makes it perfect for breakfast!

It was close enough to the original that I had in Costa Rica. Will make it again.

So good! Served with fried eggs and plantains, and five of us (including two kids) polished it off. next time I’ll double it. I also mixed Worcester, hot sauce, ketchup and cumin as suggested by a reviewer I dint know how close it was to the real salsa, but it tasted a bit like Pickapepper sauce and was delicious! I used seasoned canned beans and the liquid from the can. Not dry at all.

I used an alternative to the salsa and then added cheese and hot salsa for some spice along with the smoky flavor. Ate with some tortilla chips. Excellent.

Good. I used canned beans and regular salsa and then added Worcestershire sauce. I ate it with cheese and a tortilla which made it even better.

Delish! This was the 2nd time I make it, this time I doubled the amount of salsa Lizano. Even my picky eaters went for seconds.

This was so tasty! I didn’t have the salsa lizano but it suggested Worcestershire sauce I substituted with Annie’s vegan Worcestershire sauce and some Jamaican hot sauce delicious!

As a professional chef, I can’t just follow a recipe...so I substituted a head of roasted garlic for the tiny bit of garlic in the recipe and made my own lizano using chipotle peppers. Oh and I subbed honey for molasses because my wife went “ew!” Upon its mention. I don’t know about authentic but it sure was delicious!

It tastes good, but my Nicaraguan friend said it's not a real gallo pinto. The real one should not have bell pepper, salsa daoce and the onion should not stay in the sauce. it should be taken out.
i also visited Costa Rica and never saw them cooking it like this..

We do make this quite often and we do have Salsa Lizano. But for those of you that can’t find it, the closest thing we’ve found to Lizano is A1 Sauce.

We love this recipe and served it on the side of pan seared salmon, and a big dollop of guac.
We don’t have the salsa so winged it with whatever was in the cupboard (soya sauce, tabasco and cayenne) and served our own salsa on the side. Delish!
