This vegetarian main dish is fragrant with warm Indian spices and full of healthy protein from chickpeas. Chopping the aromatic vegetables in the blender saves time – and some tears from the onion! A pot of white or brown basmati rice makes an excellent accompaniment, in addition to naan; just put the rice on to cook when you start the chana masala. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Martha Holmberg.


  • 1 inch fresh ginger
  • 1 jalapeño chili
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1 medium onion
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt (for simmering)
  • 1 tablespoon Garam Masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 can whole peeled tomatoes (1 can is 28 oz.)
  • 2 cans chickpeas (1 can is 14 oz.)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (for simmering)
  • 1/2 cup cilantro (leaves and tender sprigs; 1/2 cup is 1/4 cup chopped; for simmering)

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (plus more to taste)
