This is my favorite beans and ham recipe. I use dry northern and pinto beans and i always add a big can of diced tomatoes! its delicious! I love the carrots and celery as well! 😋 i add chopped raw onions and ketchup when its time to eat! 😀

I adjusted this recipe quite a bit to taste. mixed equal parts vegetable stock with chicken stock amd then matched that with water. 3 cups stock/3 cups water. It calls for 3 cans precooked beans, I used 4 because I wanted a thicker consistency. I used the recommended amount of carrots & celery, and also the medium onion. Next time I will use a small onion because not everyone in the household enjoys it as much as I do, amd it was quite strong. added 1/4 cup ketchup 2 hrs before done, for flavor and color. just before finished I ladelled out 1 cup stock and added 1 teaspoon corn starch, then mixed and added back slowly over 1-2 minutes. stirred another 2 minutes and then transferred to storage as I did not serve immediately. soup was thick and hearty. added sea salt and pepper at the beginning and then again added ground sea salt with garlic flakes just before finish to taste. very good flavor and a lovely meal on a cold winters day here in Michigan. Thank you for the recipe Yummly!

Easy to do, simple ingredients but even with presoaking beans overnight, they were a bit firm for my taste even after 10 hours cooking. I think I'll do canned beans next time.

Tasty and filling. I didn’t rinse the hambone. Why rinse more flavor away? Anyway, it turned out delicious and is my go to winter recipe for that holiday ham bone.

Good base recipe. I throw in a can of beans instead of cooking them myself, and leave out the celery since I don't usually have any on hand. You can really adjust this recipe to accommodate whatever you have in your kitchen.
