One of the biggest secrets getting the right balance of flavors is after cooking the sausage, reserve the drippings from the skillet. In fact, you only need to add fresh cooking oil to the skillet if there are not enough sausage drippings for cooking the milk, flour and pepper mixture. Using drippings this way will give your sausage gravy a deeply satisfying smoky flavor and aroma.
The creamy sausage gravy below has just three main ingredients — Jimmy Dean® pork sausage, milk, and flour. But you can use any one of Jimmy Dean sausage flavor varieties to tweak your recipe. They range from mild to hot. Jimmy Dean® Regular Premium Pork Sausage and Reduced Fat Premium Pork Sausage appeal to everyone, including anyone who likes eating lightly spiced foods. Ingredients
- 1 pkg. Jimmy Dean® Premium Pork Regular Sausage
- vegetable oil (optional)
- 6 Tbsp. flour
- 1/8 tsp. ground black pepper
- 3 cups milk
- 4 biscuits (split warm, for serving)
Directions
- Cook sausage in large skillet over MEDIUM-HIGH heat 8-minutes or until thoroughly cooked, stirring frequently. Drain, reserving drippings; place sausage in bowl. If necessary, add enough oil to reserved drippings to measure 1 tablespoon. Return drippings to skillet.
- Add flour and pepper to skillet; stir with wire whisk until well blended. Cook over MEDIUM heat 6-8 minutes or until browned, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk; cook and stir 3-5 minutes or until mixture thickens and comes to a boil.
- Add sausage; cook 1-2 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently. Serve over biscuits.
