- 1 1/2 cups ruby port (you can also use tawny, or Banyuls)
- 2 star anise (pods, each broken into about six pieces)
- 1 tsp. fennel seeds (lightly crushed)
- 5 inches orange peel (pieces of)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (or more or less, to taste, See note below.)
- 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 1/4 cup whole milk (cold)
- 6 black mission figs (– 8 small dried, each cut into four slices)
- 8 oz. baking chocolate (semi-sweet or dark)
- 1 1/4 cups half & half
- 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract (good)
- 2 tsp. unsalted butter (cold, cut into small bits, but only if you are serving the pudding shortly after making it)
- 1/2 cup mascarpone (or whipped cream, measured after whipping, optional)
