Description
Just as the name promises, these buttermilk biscuits are not only gorgeous to behold — impressively tall, with distinct flaky layers — but they also have the most delicious buttery flavor. They’re completely homemade, but so easy! All you need is 6 basic ingredients and 30 minutes to make the most perfect buttermilk biscuits. Serve them with butter, jam, honey, sandwich fixings, or a hearty spoonful of gravy. The recipe, which makes 12 biscuits, is a Yummly original created by Annalise Sandberg.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus a little more for shaping if needed)
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into 1/2-inch cubes; or salted butter)
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk (cold)
- 1 large egg (for egg wash; optional)
- 1 Tbsp. water (for egg wash; optional)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400°F with a rack set in center. Line a quarter sheet pan (9x13 inches) or 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, or grease it with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add cubed butter and use a pastry blender or two table knives to cut butter into dry ingredients until pieces of butter are roughly the size of peas.
- Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add buttermilk. Use a rubber spatula to combine dry ingredients and buttermilk, stirring and folding ingredients together until dough is rough and shaggy, but no bits or loose dry ingredients remain.
