Creamy, comforting broccoli cheese soup is simple to make and hits the spot on a cold evening, but you may find yourself making this crowd-pleaser year-round! Keep it in mind for office lunches, too. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Sara Mellas.


  • 1/2 onion (large)
  • 2 large carrots
  • 2 stalks celery (medium)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 12 ounces broccoli florets (4 to 5 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for vegetables)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt (for soup)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (for soup)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (use orange cheddar, 8 oz.)
  • fresh parsley (minced, for serving)
  • salt (optional, for serving)
  • freshly ground black pepper (optional, for serving)

    It was really tasty!! Half of my family really liked it. My mother, who is the cook in our family, said it might be better if it is all blended together but I enjoyed it as is!

    Yum! Could have used more zip, but the flavor and texture were wonderful. I used half sharp cheddar and half Velveeta, so it was super smooth and creamy.

    Super yummy!! Definitely will make it again, if you like it more on the cheesy side then definitely add more cheese but if not then it’s perfect.

    it was delicious, i doubled the recipe and it turned out great. i only did 3 cups of cheddar instead of 4 for a doubled recipe. i don't like it really thick.

    It needs a little more seasoning, especially with store bought broth. I add Italian seasoning blend and a little turmeric and it's perfect. The cook times are spot on, especially if you like your vegetables al dente.

    I work at Yummly, and this delicious soup is now in my family's regular rotation. For my kid who's suspicious of broccoli (but loves cheese), I just put her portion in the blender and blend it smooth, veggies and all. Works like a charm.

    Loved it, very easy to make! Though to make it a little healthier I subbed whole milk for oat milk and used a half cup less of cheese. Still super creamy, delicious, and a great way to sneak in some veggies.
