Description
Whether you call it “stuffing or “dressing,” this got-to-have it Thanksgiving side is incredibly delicious and easy. It starts with packaged stuffing mix (your choice of regular bread or cornbread) and is enhanced with diced sweet apples and herby fresh sage. Note that if your oven is busy with turkey, you can bake the stuffing ahead and let it stand up to 2 hours, then drape it with foil and reheat it in a 325° or 350°F oven until warm, about 15 minutes. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Ashley Strickland Freeman.
Ingredients
- cooking oil spray (or use vegetable oil)
- 2 Tbsp. salted butter
- 2 stalks celery (diced, about 1 cup)
- 1 cup chopped onions (chopped; use a sweet onion such as Vidalia or a regular yellow onion)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups chicken broth (not reduced-sodium; use up to 3 cups if you like extra-moist stuffing)
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. chopped fresh sage (or up to 2 tablespoons)
- 1/4 tsp. salt (plus more to taste)
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper (plus more to taste)
- 2 Honeycrisp apples (unpeeled, diced; about 2 cups)
- 12 oz. cubed herb seasoned stuffing mix (such as Pepperidge Farm, or classic crumbled; or cornbread classic stuffing mix)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a shallow 2 1/2- to 3-quart baking dish (such as a 9x13-inch pan) with cooking spray.
- Melt butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add celery and onion and cook, stirring often, until tender, about 5 minutes (reduce heat to medium if vegetables start to brown too quickly). Remove from heat.
- Whisk eggs, 2 1/2 cups chicken broth, the sage, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper to blend in a large mixing bowl. Add onion mixture, apples, and stuffing mix and toss gently until well mixed. If using cubed stuffing mix, let stuffing stand about 5 minutes; then stir, let stand another 5 minutes to soften slightly, and toss again. For any style of stuffing mix, stir in up to ½ cup more chicken broth if you like a more moist stuffing. Transfer stuffing to the prepared baking dish.
- Bake stuffing until lightly browned and crusty, about 40 minutes. Season with more salt and pepper to taste if you like.
