  • 1 3/4 cups flour (all-purpose)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup coffee (freshly brewed hot)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons hibiscus flowers (dried)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese (at room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick // 4 ounces, at room temperature)
  • 3 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar (sifted, see baker's notes)
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

    Loved this cake so much. Made mine a little differently. Used apple sauce instead of eggs for a super moist cake. Used Greek vanilla yogurt mixed with buttercream frosting and 2 tsp of instant coffee to make my frosting. Layered raspberry preserves in between every other layer for added flavor. Thanks for sharing this amazing cake. It was fun to play around with.
